How to Start the New School Year on the “Right” Foot with Resilient Kids…

It’s nearly time to send our babies into a new school year, another year older, another grade with a whole bunch of new learning (for ALL of us), woah baby, time sure does fly!!!

I find this time such a powerful opportunity to reflect, to be sure that I am present enough to enjoy every moment to its fullest because it feels like “BLINK” and it’s gone and I don’t want to live with any regrets, let ANYTHING (like my own baggage) stand in my way, but that conversation is for another day…

TODAY I want to discuss the ways we can be empowered to tackle the coming year and all its challenges with a PLAN to help set our kids up with resilience right from the start. Otherwise we find ourselves on the back foot, in damage control dealing with “stuff” that could have been avoided or dramatically minimised…

We often forget that the new school year is actually a HUGE stress for our kids, as much as they might be excited about going back to school, there’s another side they are internally facing that they are likely ill equipped to deal with simply because we don’t have the skills we really need to live a “stress” free life and our kids are only as capable as we are! They live what they learn remember…

If you get anxious, stress, yell, withhold, shame, berate, judge, criticise, see the negative, eat poorly…SO WILL your kids!

BUT, we can take back our power as mums and teach our kids to do the same and sit back and watch them shine, free from OUR BAGGAGE!

So I propose an “Action Checklist” as follows:

  1. Great nutrition: our bodies are made up of the stuff we eat AND we really need to comprehend that everything we put in our mouth has consequences. There’s NO crazy nutrition approach required here, just eat real food!   2. Neuroscience: our “BRAIN” is the key organ responsible for our wellness! One aspect to understand that is central to this conversation is “relaxation” of our brain and nervous system. We need to ask ourselves if we are OVERLOADING our kids with activities and limiting the critical down time that they need. It’s easy to do because we want to give our kids opportunities as mums, expose them to extra curricular “life”, usually due to our own unmet needs, and it’s potentially harming them and creating unhealthy brain patterns. Our brain needs to have periods of inactivity, NOTHING to do, NOTHING to learn, NOTHING to focus on (not tv) in order for it to perform certain “settling” and “restoring” functions, to absorb and process the experiences of the day. One great clue that you are creating the optimal brain environment is when you get a sense, or your kids tell you, they’re bored! This is the precipice of creativity allowing the brain to do what it needs to do and importantly, to optimise nervous system dominance in the Vagus nerve which is the critical “Wellness” nerve in the body. If we LOAD our kids with “activities” they never get this chance, and it’s NOT a sleep function, it’s a waking NEED! It takes us mums to ask ourselves tough questions which only the courageous are willing to do, that’s why EXTRAORDINARY health and happiness is not for everyone, the majority WILL follow the normal path on the way to preventable disease…
  3. Sleep: is vital for LIFE! Sleep is understood to be critical to wellness, both immune health and emotional coping capacity, the 2 things we want to nurture as a key back to school resilience building strategy. It’s easy to let this slip for our kids over holidays but with a week and a bit to go, NOW is a great time to get them into a sleep routine that nourishes immune and mental health. A healthy dinner that follows the PFF rule discussed in the “Nourishing Breakfast Essentials” training will fuel a healthy sleep, keep blood sugar levels balances throughout the night (an underlying reason for sleep disturbance) and enhance ALL the internal functions that happen throughout the night.
