Have you ever read the label of your toothpaste? Did you dismiss the warning that states children are NOT swallow it and only a pea sized amount be used? Did you know that the US government has issued warnings to parents recommending infants and children not be exposed to fluoridated water at all?
There is an enormous body of evidence that clearly highlights the potential for neurological impairment from fluoride exposure and our children are at significant risk. There are over 20 human studies and over 100 animal studies that show the physiological impact of fluoride including thyroid issues (an increasing disease), ADD/ADHD and other behavioural issues (all increasing in prevalence), depression (an increasing disease), lowered IQ (significantly increasing condition for which governments globally have responded by dumbing down our expectations regarding school standards). Regardless of these very real consequences directly linked with fluoride exposure, when the body is impacted at a cellular level by a toxin such as this, the fact is just about anything can go wrong.
Reported effects of fluoride just on the brain include:
• Reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
• Damage to your hippocampus
• Formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer’s disease)
• Reduction in lipid content
• Damage to purkinje cells
• Exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency
• Impaired antioxidant defense systems
• Increased uptake of aluminum
• Accumulation of fluoride in your pineal gland
The most shocking thing is that the harmful effects of fluoride have been known by conventional medical organisations for over half a century. For example, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) stated in their Sept. 18, 1943 issue that fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons that change the permeability of the cell membrane by certain enzymes. And, an editorial published in the Journal of the American Dental Association on Oct. 1, 1944, stated:
Drinking water containing as little as 1.2 ppm fluoride will cause developmental disturbances. We cannot run the risk of producing such serious systemic disturbances. The potentialities for harm outweigh those for good.
More recently, in 2012, a group of researchers reviewed the available data and reiterated these warnings even suggesting that children are at increased risk from ongoing low level exposure and an urgent review of standards is required to protect their future health, “Developmental Fluoride Neurotoxicity: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”, Environ Health Perspect. 2012 October; 120(10): 1362-1368.
The arguments for the use of fluoride are unconvincing indeed and outstripped by the negative consequences. If you think fluoride protects teeth in any way that cannot be achieved by more safe means I encourage you to further research the topic. Fluoride use actually causes dental fluorosis, stained teeth. In fact the health of our teeth has far more to do with internal processes and nutrient status determined by diet than how vigilant we are with brushing with toothpaste.
Our kids are exposed to fluoride in a range of different ways and many of them are within our control and the consensus is that we must reduce our kids exposure any way we can to reduce their risk of the exponentially growing picture of disease. Most scheme water supplies contain fluoride so exploring filtration systems is the first step. Consult a local expert such as Think Water in Dunsborough.
Switch your toothpaste to something that doesn’t put your child and risk and in fact enhances health such as using mineral rich diatomaceous earth (useful for many reasons you would be wise to be giving your child a dose daily anyway), baking soda and coconut oil. There are many recipes online but the one we like is as follows and requires making regularly for freshness:
- 1 tsp aloe gel fresh from the plant
- 1 heaped tsp diatomaceous earth (food grade from Fossil Power)
- 2 heaped tsp baking soda
- 1 heaped tbsp coconut oil
- organic stevia drops to taste, get the flavoured ones from Nirvana
- Optional: additional oils such as peppermint and perhaps oregano and clove for adults who suffer from gum issues
Combine these ingredients and keep in a sealed container, use daily in conjunction with coconut oil pulling. You can play with the quantities to get the consistency you like best. It needn’t even be this complicated, you can keep a container of baking soda in the bathroom and dunk your toothbrush in that and brush away.
The bottom line is reducing our kids exposure to this poison is the objective and taking steps today will protect their developing brains and long term health. We really can create lasting health and happiness for our kids by making improved nutrition and lifestyle choices. Join an upcoming workshop or online event and get educated today.
