Elderberry Ginger Kids Immune Syrup (DIY)

Right now is the time to be thinking about boosting your child’s immune health. Along with a cracking diet, I also recommend the use of some wonderful, kid friendly herbs. Being a herbalist at heart I am so drawn to nature for answers to our health; to build extraordinary health, to prevent disease and to treat health issues. One of my favourites for kids (and big babies) is the Elder (Sambucus), both flower and berry can be used and are very effective for boosting immune health for  prevention as well as treatment in the case of an acute infection. Watch this video to show you how.

Kids really love this herb as well thanks to the appealing flavour. My recipe today uses elderberries but you could just as easily use  flowers. If you have fresh of either then feel free to use them, simply double the amount in the recipe.

I am also making some strategic additions to this wonderful immune syrup to make it even more effective at fighting infections like coughs and colds in kids. I have added ginger for its immune fighting punch as well as tumeric, local raw honey and essential oils. This is an incredibly comprehensive immune building and infection fighting tonic for kids, I call it the superhero of home remedies!

It’s vitally important that we are prepared for the inevitable winter onslaught of bugs in the light of the growing body of research highlighting the damage that typical pharmaceutical intervention with antibiotics and pain relief medication has on the health of our kids.

Antibiotics not only disrupt the gut microbiome and immune system, it appears they alter our DNA and cellular energy production potential. The damage is far worse than was first feared!

Natural remedies have stood the test of time and this wonderful example can be made quickly and easily to provide real benefit for your kids to boost immune health daily and also to treat an infection.

All you need for this recipe is organic of the following:

  • 1 cup of elderberries (dried)
  • 1 cup of sliced ginger
  • 3 cups of pure water
  • 1/2 cup local raw honey
  • 5 shakes of tumeric, about 1/2 tsp
  • 3-5 drops of essential oil such as Doterra Onguard

Simmer the elderberries, ginger and water until liquid is reduced by half. Cool completely, strain and press the juice out of the berries as much as possible. Stir in remaining ingredients and store in a glass jar or medicine bottles for use. Remember to label it with date of manufacture. This will keep for 1-2 years in a cool spot in the pantry or in the fridge if you prefer.

For prevention, you can use 1/2-1 tsp once a day and this is suitable from 1 year on. You can make this syrup without honey and it is suitable in infancy. Adults can take 2-3 times this amount.

As a treatment this syrup can be used 3-4 times daily at the above doses.

There is a whole world of natural remedies that support and build our little people in any acute or chronic event as well as for prevention of disease. Join an upcoming program either LIVE or ONLINE to take your knowledge and skills further to create extraordinary health and happiness for your family.
