“The countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the ones where people drink the most milk and have the most calcium in their diets. The connection between calcium consumption and bone health is actually very weak, and the connection between dairy consumption and bone health is almost nonexistent.”
(Amy Lanou Ph.D., nutrition director for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington, D.C.)
It’s incredibly common for kids to drink milk, in fact this misguided advice is a directive from doctors, child health nurses and our very own food pyramid so why would you even question it! So how do you feel to know that this common practice of drinking cow’s milk is known to drive health issues in humans? Even directly cause the very condition it is said to prevent! I have seen milk be a problem in countless clinical cases and firmly believe it is a food our kids SHOULD NOT consume in its plain, pasteurised or unpasteurised form. I will get to fermented dairy later.
Frighteningly research has shown that consuming milk actually depletes the body of calcium, a result of the need to alkalise after it’s consumption. With calcium being used to do this, the body takes it from the bones to achieve this end, resulting in a deficit. Surprisingly, studies demonstrating that milk and dairy products actually fail to protect bones from fractures outnumber studies that prove otherwise. Even drinking milk from a young age does not protect against future fracture risk but actually increases it. Shattering the “savings account” calcium theory, Cumming and Klineberg report their study findings as follows:
“Consumption of dairy products, particularly at age 20 years, was associated with an increased risk of hip fracture in old age. (“Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Hip Fractures in the Elderly”. American Journal of Epidemiology. Vol. 139, No. 5, 1994).
And the 12 year long Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that those who consumed the most calcium from dairy foods broke more bones than those who rarely drank milk. This is a broad study based on 77,761 women aged 34 through 59 years of age.
But let’s talk more about this from a common sense perspective. Do you really believe, this marvellous human vessel has a design flaw that would result in us needing to find another milk supply after breastfeeding because the job just hasn’t been done? Cow’s milk is an entirely different food to human breastmilk, it is designed to raise a 50kg newborn to a tonne of grown cow in a couple of years. It is made up of an entirely different profile of elements with loads more protein, another element that needs calcium buffering causing more of a mineral deficiency! Let’s not forget the routine treatment of milking cows with antibiotics and other growth factors that transfers to our KIDS through the milk! This is seriously risky business.
Many experts agree that milk is a food that is best avoided, it is a key inflammatory driver and our children are simply best off without it. Given that its recommended inclusion in our diets is not based on any proven science, in fact the opposite is much more widely supported in literature, then we need to ask why we are still doing it and potentially damaging our kids with it? Is it habit, because you can break them? Is it addiction, well that speaks volumes about potential health issues that need addressing!
